Abrasive Wheels Competent Person Training

Employers are required under the Abrasive Wheel Regulations 1970 to provide detailed training to any Employee who within their job is required to mount abrasive wheels.

To provide individuals with the knowledge and understanding needed to carry out inspection an identification of abrasive wheel and ensuring they are fit for purpose. To competently carry out, wheel changes, balancing of abrasive wheels and dressing of wheels. Also in a competent manner and to industry standards and techniques strip down and refit guards and safety devices.
 
Course Content
 
The theory session will cover:
 
  • Review of relevant H&S regulation and appropriate PPE
  • Competent person’s responsibilities and relevant risk assessments
  • Tools for dressing and mounting of abrasive wheels
  • Identification of abrasive wheels, ensuring they are not fit for purpose and the probable causes that give rise to wheel failure
  •  
    The practical activities will include:
     
  • How to safely isolate a pedestal grinder prior to carrying out maintenance activities
  • How to safely isolate a pedestal grinder prior to carrying out maintenance activities
  • Checking for faults by inspecting, wheel mounting and safety devices
  • How to mount a new abrasive wheel
  • How to refit safety devices and machine guards
  • Start up procedure for new wheels
  • How to dress existing wheels

    Review
     
    Each candidate will be assessed as to their competence in carrying out the practical activities also a theory question paper will be taken by each candidate to ensure their understanding of the subjects.
     
    Practical Assessment
     
    The practical session requires each individual attending the course to strip down a grinder, install a new wheel and restart the machine also to dress a wheel on a pedestal grinder.
