Slinging & Lifting

The aim of the course is to provide the course members with the theoretical and practical requirements of slinging and lifting safely and to ensure that the operation of the overhead travelling crane is carried out in accordance with best working practice.

On completion of the course candidates will be able to understand:

  • Develop an understanding of the legal requirements of both the employer and employee relating to lifting equipment
  • Ensure compliance with Safe Working Load requirements
  • Identify the Slinging Methods and good slinging practices
  • Recognise the different types of slings in use and the faults which must be reported
  • Identify the causes of accidents relating to this type of work and the steps to take to prevent accidents
  • Estimate the weight of loads
  • Ensure safe use of the lifting appliance and carry out daily checks
  • Apply good slinging and lifting practices to a range of loads which would be normally encountered, using a variety of slings and operate the lifting device in a safe and responsible manner, using a standard code of signals where appropriate
  •
The above objectives will be measured by both a theoretical and practical assessment.
